We have unfortunately had to make the decision upon veterinary advice to retire Le Seychellois after he sustained an injury to his foot on his last run at Worcester where he won for the first time under rules since his debut in this country as a 4 year old when trained by Paul Nicholls. It comes as a great shame for the 12 year old as he was in great form and the plan was to keep running him while the ground remained good and he remained well. He had showed improved form on his last 3 runs and we felt that he would have gone close again as he fitness improved and his confidence grew.
Le Seychellois has been a great old horse to have on the yard in every way, he was a great influence on all the younger horses around as he still loved his work and he was also a pleasure to do. It was fantastic and gave me great pleasure to get the win out of him that he and his loyal owners Richard Hewitt and Mr and Mrs Stockton deserved on what turned out to be his final run.
12 year old veteran Le Seychellois rolled back the years yesterday carrying top weight to victory in the 2m 7f 0-95 handicap chase at Worcester for owners Richard (Timeform) Hewitt and Mr and Mrs John Stockton.
In the hands of Samantha Drake he jumped and travelled supremely taking the lead 6 from home and that was where he stayed showing good resolution to win by half a length.
It was well deserved for the horse and the owners. He won 3 point-to-points in 8 days back in 2011 where he struck into himself on the last of those victories which put him out for the rest of the season. He came back pointing this year and felt in great form except for his jumping. We examined his back and treated him for kissing spines and thankfully the owners patience and perseverance has been rewarded with yesterdays victory.
We will be looking to get him out again soon either over fences or over hurdles so long as the ground remains good and we can find a suitable race for him over an easy 3 miles.
Well done Chester!
