ALPHA VICTOR put in a fantastic effort in the £100,000 Midlands National at Uttoxeter on saturday to be 2nd under Peter Buchanan at 33-1 for owners Denton, Kinsey, Fifield and Wesley-Yates. He was beaten only 2 1/2 lengths by the well backed favourite Goulanes and it was a further 11 lengths back to the 3rd.
The Racing Post said “Alpha Victor ran a cracker from 5lb out of the weights, moving smoothly into contention but finding the winner too strong.”
This was only his fourth run over fences and he´d refused early in two of them as he has suffered from an on going hind leg problem. He won at Sedgefield on his 2nd start over fences earlier in the season only to refuse the next time at Warwick. After Warwick we treated his problem and continued with his rehabilitation and tried to regain his confidence over fences. He then came out and won a 3 mile hurdle at Bangor on his next run which helped to put him spot on for saturdays effort. He has not been the easiest to train but he is so genuine and days like saturday make it all worth while.
Victor will remain in training for a few more weeks whilst we see how he has come out of the race and while we keep an eye on what the weather is doing. We are hoping that the Welsh Grand National next season will be his main target.
